Equivalent Fractions

Introduce 1/3/, 2/6 and 4/12 as equivalent fractions in grade 3. Use egg cartons to hold 12 objects.

I noticed in my reading today that some people are saying that fractions need to be taught as early as grade 1 and others are saying that they shouldn't be taught in elementary at all.

Penny Fractions

Arrange 1oo pennies to make different fractions.

Divide pennies into 2 equal groups.

1/2 = 50/100 = 0.50

Divide pennies into 4 equal groups

1/4 = 25/100 = 0.25
